A Brew Kettle For The Nunnery

In 1406 the cantor from the church in Roskilde – Jens Brynnekesen – sold a brew kettle to the Cistercian nunnery of the same town. A vessel of quite an impressive size; it can contain approximately 14 barrels of beer – probably around 1.800 liters (approximation based on the 17th century Danish standard of 131,5 l for a single beer barrel).

Let it be known to all that are alive today and in the future that I have sold, deeded and divested to the pious virgins, that is the nuns in the Monastery of Our Lady in Roskilde, a brew kettle of 14 barrels or thereabouts belonging to me that I have inherited from my late father… (my translation)
